Lot Essay

Galerie Brame & Lorenceau has confirmed the authenticity of this work.
L'Anniversaire was Fantin-Latour's tribute to the famed composer Hector Berlioz, whose symphony Romeo and Juliet had a profound impact on the artist. This dramatic symphony inspired the artist to subsequently produce several paintings, drawings and lithographs. The present drawing is most probably a preparatory study for the painting of the same subject previously in the Roger Marx collection and now located in the Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo (Mme Fantin, no. 740) and to the lithograph of the Hediard catalogue (Mme Fantin, no. 771).
