A self-taught artist, Michael Kitching first rose to prominence in the Australian art scene with Last Supper - Premonition, which won the Blake prize in 1964. An early preference for junk materials was soon replaced by 1967 by a predilection for creating works from aluminium and coloured Perspex. Hanging Light Sculpture was one of the artist's early works in these new media. The sculpture maximises the luminosity and brilliant surface of Perspex through its circular shape and illumination from a single lightbulb. An aluminium frame, shaped like the blades of a propeller, gives the piece an underlying structure, while enabling it to retain a lightness of form.
