Lot Essay

Callow spent some of his early years in Paris sharing a studio with Thomas Shotter Boys, and thus came into contact with Richard Parkes Bonington, whose influence is seen in this lovely depiction of Antwerp.
This work is after a painting in the Louvre formerly attributed to Simon de Vlieger. Callow made numerous references in his autobiography to the copies he made of this painting.
