FIRST EDITION, second issue of volume I with the 4-page supplement at end. The earliest record of the balloon flight conducted by the Montgolfier brothers in 1783. "It is the first serious treatise on aerostation as a practical possibility" (PMM). In December 1783, the pysicist Jaques Charles ascended in a hydrogen ballon for a two-hour voyage. "Charles's work was financed through the efforts of Faujas de Saint-Fond, whose account of it appears in the second volume of his work" (Norman). Norman 769; PMM 229. (2)
