FAUJAS DE SAINT-FONT, Barthélemy (1741-1819). Description des expériences de la machine aérostatique de MM. Montgolfier. Paris: Cuchet, 1783-84. 2 volumes, 8° (vol.I: 190 x 122mm; vol.II: 200 x 118mm). Engraved frontispiece in each volume by N. De Launay after Ch. de Lorimier and 12 plates, one folding letterpress table, woodcut head- and tailpieces (some light staining in both volumes, mainly marginal, outer margin of 3 plates cropped with loss of border, K8 and M8 in vol. II with long closed tear affecting text). Volume I bound in contemporary calf-backed mottled boards, volume II in contemporary polished calf (head and tail of spine of vol. I chipped away, extremities of both vols. rubbed). Provenance: M. De Broval (book-label in vol.I); armorial bookplate with motto 'Strike' in vol. II).
FIRST EDITION, second issue of volume I with the 4-page supplement at end. The earliest record of the balloon flight conducted by the Montgolfier brothers in 1783. "It is the first serious treatise on aerostation as a practical possibility" (PMM). In December 1783, the pysicist Jaques Charles ascended in a hydrogen ballon for a two-hour voyage. "Charles's work was financed through the efforts of Faujas de Saint-Fond, whose account of it appears in the second volume of his work" (Norman). Norman 769; PMM 229. (2)
