LOPEZ PINCIANO, Alonso. Philosophia antigua poetica. Madrid: Thomas Iunti, 1596. 4° (197 x 132mm). Small woodcut vignette (device?) of the Virgin and Child on title, on verso engraved arms of the dedicatee, Graf Johann Kevenhiler, imperial ambassador to Spain (a little occasional spotting and staining in second half of book) but a good copy in 17th-century vellum, double gilt fillet round sides. Provenance: S.F. (letters inked onto top edges).
FIRST EDITION of Lopez Pinciano's ingenious commentary on Aristotle's Poetica. The author (fl. second half of the sixteenth century), poet and critic, also practised medicine and was the personal physician of Maria of Castile, daughter of Charles V. By all accounts his talents at literary criticism outweighed those of his poetry. Palau 141819.
