A LARGE BLUE AND WHITE DISH
YONGZHENG SIX-CHARACTER MARK IN UNDERGLAZE BLUE WITHIN A DOUBLE CIRCLE AND OF THE PERIOD (1723-1735)
With deep rounded sides rising to an everted rim, the center of the interior painted in rich deep blue with a five-clawed dragon leaping amidst clouds as it clutches a shou medallion below four further dragons striding amidst clouds in the well, the flat rim decorated with a wave band within a raised edge and the exterior decorated with froth-capped waves breaking against five rocks
17¾ in. (45 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

A Yongzheng-marked blue and white dragon dish of this design and large size from the collection of the T. Y. Chao Family Foundation was included in the exhibition, Ming and Ch'ing Porcelain, Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong, 1978, no. 81. Another example, dated to the early 18th century and in the Royal Ontario Museum, is illustrated by J. E. Vollmer, E. J. Keall, and E. Nagai-Berthrong, Silk Roads - China Ships, The Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, 1983, p. 229.
