Lot Essay

The drapery is exceptionally well-carved and generously spills over onto the base. This treatment relates to late Gandharan examples such as the large seated Buddha at the Cleveland Museum; see S. Czuma, Kushan Sculpture: Images from Early India, 1985, cat. no. 108. The unusual base is carved with overlapping downturned petals, again relating to larger Gandharan seated figures with tapered tangs plugged into separately carved lotus bases of this type.
