Wearing a diaphanous dhoti decorated with foliate swags in relief, a meditation string draped across his shoulder, a floral srivatsa in relief on his chest, with a tapered headdress decorated with scrolling foliage and curls of hair extending down to the shoulders

Lot Essay

The remaining part of a floral garland around the shoulders and the diamond-shaped srivatsa mark on the chest suggest a probably identification of Vishnu; compare another example in the Norton Simon Museum, illustrated in P. Pal, Art from the Indian Subcontinent, 2003, cat. no. 94, p. 136.
