Eastern Java, circa 13th Century
The goddess seated on a cushion backed by a mandorlaa, clad in a diaphanous dhoti secured with a foliate belt, her fleshy curves accentuated with multiple necklaces, armlets, and earrings, the face delicately carved in a peaceful expression, the hair pulled up into an elaborate chignon secured with a foliate tiara

Lot Essay

This sculpture is striking for its full rounded forms and unusual ovoid base with crisply carved ornamentation. It is carved from a porous buff volcanic stone, andesite.
