Lot Essay

A.Palmer An Encyclopedia of Napoleon's Europe, New York, 1984, p31. Eugene Rose de Beauharnais (1781-1824) was Prince-Viceroy of Italy and Napoleon's stepson. He began his military career at the age of fourteen as an orderly to General Hoche in the Vendie. He served as Napoleon's aide-de-camp in Italy before participating in the Egyptian and Syrian campaigns. This would explain the Egyptian-style hieroglyphs to the back of this sculpture.
