etching with drypoint, 1652, first state (of three), before the rustmarks, a very good impression with traces of burr, mainly to the central figures and those at the upper right, with thread margins or trimmed on the platemark, a small paper defect at the upper left, a few pale foxmarks, otherwise in generally good condition

Lot Essay

Although Rembrandt clearly relished depicting the apocalyptic events in Christ's life he was also drawn to the more intimate scenes. Here and in the following lot the 12 year-old debates with the teachers of the scriptures in the temple.
