etching with drypoint and engraving, 1641, with a partial watermark Cross of Lorraine (cf. A. & F., p. 83), a very good impression of the second (final) state, printed with tone and burr to the fallen rider at the lower right, the cap of the mounted archer at left and elsewhere, occasionally trimmed to the platemark, otherwise with thread margins, two unobtrusive vertical creases at the upper centre of the subject, minor defects at the upper sheet corners where previously mounted, some superficial soiling, otherwise in good condition

Lot Essay

Commentators have often remarked on the fact that Rembrandt considered this very sketchy plate to be finished, complete with signature and date. It is a large work, making the sketch-like qualities even more conspicuous, but he must have been confident that there was a market for this type of infinito. Some connoisseurs will undoubtedly have appreciated the virtuosity displayed here, and the rendition of such a whirling spectacle on the plate in one fell swoop testifies to immense audacity and self-confidence.
