It is some comfort to me yet to be a spectator of your sports.' (From Fernando de Rojas' La Tragicomedia de Calisto y Melibea, 1499.) Inspired by de Rojas' Celestina, Picasso's La Celestine constitutes one of his greatest character creations. Emerging from deep within his Spanish heritage, the bawdy procuress takes on a renewed importance in Picasso's old age; reduced similarly to the indignant position of the voyeur, Picasso knew that he too was 'past all danger of ravishing'. Nevertheless, it is as passive outsider that Picasso manages to summon his most creative energy, providing some of the most inventive and amusing images in the series.
