Lot Essay

This rug has a field design of simplifed shield-like palmettes with stylised arabesque leaves taken directly from 18th century Kuba shield rugs. (Hali, Vol.1. No.1. fig.69, p.17 for example). The mock kufic border is well known in Kuba from the early 19th century onwards.
