Lot Essay

The powerful and unusual combination of the three Lesghi medallions with the Bordjalu border work extremely well together in this rug. The design and colour are harmoniously balanced and the inclusion of a number of minor motifs help to retain the informal characteristics of village weaving. Another example of a Kazak rug using a single column of three Leshgi medallions was sold in Sotheby's New York, 3 December 1988, lot 129.
