Lot Essay

The present work is sold with a copy of a letter by Federico Zeri confirming the attribution to Cantarini after inspecting it in person (written communication, 18 June 1968).

We are grateful to Professor Daniele Benati for confirming the attribution to Cantarini from a color transparency (written communication, 5 February 2006) and for pointing out he believes this work to be from Cantarini's last and most intense phase, as is the Portrait of Cardinal Barberini (Galleria Nazionale, Rome).

We are also grateful to Professor Andrea Emiliani for confirming the attribution to Cantarini from color photographs (written communication, 9 February 2006) and for dating the painting to circa 1642.
