PROPERTY FORMERLY FROM THE COLLECTION OF LADY SLIM KEITH
Lady Slim Keith, the original "California girl," was an unwitting fashion icon who liked to run with the boys. While married to director Howard Hawks, Slim made the scene in Hollywood and was a sought after addition to any party. She is hailed as the inventor of modern American chic, having graced the best dressed lists almost yearly while she was alive. Slim counted among her closest friends, the who's who of the time, including Cary Grant, Babe Paley, and Ernest Hemingway. Through her personality and style, she embodied the seeming paradox of a glamorous woman who doubled as a man's man. Hawks even modeled Lauren Bacall's character in To Have and Have Not after Slim, stealing from her that famous line, "You know how to whistle, don't you? Just put your lips together and blow."
