Lot Essay

The holes along the diadem would originally have carried a metal ornament made of gold or gilt-bronze, as would the pierced ear which would have been adorned by an earring. Cf. A. W. Lawrence, Greek and Roman Sculpture, London, 1972, p. 120, pl. 22, for a marble goddess in Berlin with similar hairstyle and ornament.
