Please note both examples are signed. The handled example is inscribed 'Ceramic Art Co. K.B. Sears Dec. 5 1891' on the underside; the 'fern pot' is signed K.B. Sears near the base. See Alice Cooney Frelinghuysen, American Porcelain 1770-1920, New York, 1989, pp. 58-59, 260-265, for similarly carved examples by this artist. The 'fern pot', ref. 102, is of similar form to the present bowl. Here it is noted that a similar bowl is illustrated in the catalogue Ceramic Art Co., 1897. Kate Sears is recorded as active circa 1891 to 1893 and little is known about her artistic career after this date. The date on the current piece is slightly indistinct and could also possibly read as Dec. 5, 1897.
