Lot Essay

The 'cellaret' or 'gardvine' wine-cistern has a domed lid that reflects the elegant Grecian fashion introduced at the end of the 18th century, and relates to a pattern in Gillows 1787 Estimate Sketch Book (L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 183).
