Lot Essay

Evreinov's 'The Chief Thing' (Samoe glavnoe), a play in four acts, was first performed in Petrograd at the Vol'naia Komediia theatre on 20th February 1921. On this occasion Iurii Annenkov designed the set. The play had its debut in New York at the Guild Theatre five years later, this time with Sergei Sudeikin's stage designs.
