The Iussupov service was commissioned in 1798 by Paul I for the Winter Palace. The present montieth would have been one of several in the service which were designed to chill wine glasses. The bowl would have been filled with ice and the notches were created to hold the stem of each wine glass in place so that the bowl of each glass could be chilled.
