Lot Essay

Lot 371 was a gift from Stieglitz to E.M. Benson, author of John Marin: The Man and His Work, 1935, the earliest publication on Marin's work, in which Stieglitz's portrait appeared as the volume's frontispiece. The photograph was later exhibited at the Philadelphia Museum of Art where E.M. Benson became Director of Education.
