Lot Essay

The decoration was executed by Ignaz Preissler (b. 1676), who was employed as a Hausmaler by Count Franz Karl Liebsteinsky von Kolowrat from 1716-1753 in Reichenau Castle, Kronstadt, in Bohemia. See Rudolf von Strasser Twelve Preissler Glasses, Journal of Glass Studies, The Corning Museum of Glass, 1973, Vol. XV, pp. 135-142, for a discussion of twelve 'Schwarzlot' glasses which he argues represent the only tangible basis for attribution of Preissler's work in the absence of any definite documentary pieces.
For related tumblers see R. von Strasser, Licht und Farbe, Vienna, 2002, p.170 ills. 96-97 for similar Orientals and palm trees.
