Lot Essay
We are grateful to Dr. Mary Newcome Schleier for proposing the attribution to Giovanni Stefano Robatto on the basis of photographs.
Born in Savona, Robatto entered the workshop of Carlo Maratti in Rome at a very young age, around 1662, where he remained for more than fifteen years. He then travelled to Naples, Messina, Bologna, Venice and Germany. He finally returned to his native city in 1683, where he received important commissions, no doubt benefitting from his wide-ranging experience, in Liguria and Piedmont.
