Lot Essay

Janssens was born in London in 1593 to Flemish parents. He trained in the Netherlands, but returned to live in London in 1618 and painted numerous bust-length portraits of members of the gentry and professionals during the 1620s. In 1632, Janssens was appointed 'his Majesty's servant in the quality of Picture drawer'. He painted a small full-length portrait of King Charles I (Staatliche Kunst Sammlungen Dresden, Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister), and collaborated with Gerard Houckgeest on a small full-length of Queen Henrietta Maria in 1637 (private collection). The present portrait of a lady is one of Janssens' later works, executed after his return to the Netherlands in 1643. He is known to have spent time in Amsterdam, Middleburg and the Utrecht during this period.
