Lot Essay

The present lot depicts manoeuvres during the Ten-day Battle near Hasselt in August of 1831. The Dutch troops were under the command of the General De Constant Rebeigne and the Duke of Saksen Weimar. The Belgian army was led by General Damme.

The composition clearly shows the skill of Schelfhout. A panoramic view of a sweeping plain is animated in the foreground by advancing troups and spectators. With unsurpassed clarity he depict the battle taking place in the distance.

The present lot is a fine rarety in the oeuvreof the artist,as it is both historical and anecdotic in its subject matter.
