Lot Essay
The chairs have tall backs styled for the Italian damask patterns of 21 inch width. The suite (including the stool in the following lot) is designed in the manner of Royal cabinet-maker Thomas Roberts who suppied chairs with similarly scrolled legs and gadroon-capped feet for Hampton Court Palace in around 1700 (A. Bowett, English Furniture 1660 - 1714 From Charles II to Queen Anne, Woodbridge, 2002, p. 247, pl. 8:33). A table with similarly scrolled legs from Hampton Court, Leominster, was sold Christie's, London, 29 November 1979, lot 55. The design of the legs and boldly scrolled front apron derives from court designer Daniel Marot's Second Livre d'Appartements (pl. 6) published in 1703 (reproduced in A. Bowett, ibid, p. 8:19).
