Lot Essay

According to Esther Sparks Canto XIV was intended to be the final page in the Cantos portfolio, to coincide with Newman's monumental painting series The Fourteen Stations of the Cross, but he was so excited by the reds in both the title page and Canto XIV that he decided to add four more pages.
