Lot Essay

The present watch is a rare example of the celebrated Dato Compax model featuring an original replacement dial. Such dials, always with the sunburst finish and applied gold numerals, were exclusively fitted by Rolex when the original dial could no longer be saved. Interestingly, these substitute dials do not feature the "Chronograph" logo on the dial but only "Oyster".

For a discussion and illustration of such dial see I Cronografi Rolex - La Leggenda, Pucci Papaleo Editore, p. 406 & 407.
