Lot Essay
The early Horton House, Northamptonshire was overhauled by Daniel Garrett either for George Montagu, 1st Earl of Halifax (d.1739) or his son, the 2nd Earl in the 1750s. Further improvements, including the celebrated Gothick Menagerie lovingly restored by Gervase Jackson-Stopps, were carried out under the direction of Thomas Wright. The principal house was tragically demolished in 1938. This fender was presumably supplied at around the time that Horton featured resplendent in J.P Neale, Views of Seats, 1st series, 1818, i.
