Lot Essay
The design by Voysey for this chimney-piece was illustrated in The Studio in 1899, and this particular one was for Mrs. McKay, at 30, Shrewsbury Road, Birkenhead, the complete interior of which was furnished by Voysey, and some of the drawings for which are in the Royal Institute of British Architects. The house was completed in 1902. A pair of chairs from this house are in the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery. The contents of Mrs. McKay's house were auctioned in 1945, and the chairs were probably sold to Brighton in the 1960s.
The Metropolitan Museum, New York, has another chimney-piece of this design, though with its ash-guard missing (see Charlotte Gere and Michael Whiteway, Nineteenth Century Design, 1993, pl. 303, p. 241), and Voysey himself had a chimney-piece of this design in his bedroom at The Orchard, Chorleywood (see John Brandon-Jones et al, C.F.A. Voysey: Architect and Designer, 1857-1941, 1978, the catalogue of an exhibition at the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery, p. 76). Another chimney-piece of this model is shown in a bedroom at Moor Crag, Windermere, designed by Voysey for J.W. Buckley in 1899 (see Duncan Simpson, C.F.A. Voysey, an architect of individuality, 1979, fig. 30g, p. 76).
