These Roman-medallion sconce frames, with Venus-shell issuing from Roman acanthus, are designed in the Louis XIV fashion promoted by the Paris-trained architect Daniel Marot (d.1752); and relates to his pattern for single-branch sconces flanking an overmantel glass in his
Nouveaux Livre de Cheminées à la Hollandaise, 1712.
This sconce pattern is similar to that of four sconces attributed to the manufactures of Queen Anne's Royal glass-maker, John Gumley; these may have been commissioned from him by Thomas Pelham-Holles around the time of his elevation in 1715 as Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (of the 2nd creation) (d.1768) (R.W. Symonds, Masterpieces of English Furniture and Clocks, 1940, p.63 fig.41). A related oval girandole plate was sold from the Estate of Marjorie Wiggin Prescott, Christie's, New York, lot 195.

Major General Edward Henry Goulburn was an inveterate connoisseur and collector, who lived at Betchworth House, Surrey, Apley Park, Salop and Woodcote, Salop. He acquired a superb collection of English and French furniture, important Old Master paintings, miniatures and books.
