Lot Essay

The present watercolor closely relates to Feininger's celebrated painting Dunes at Eventide (Hess, 376) in the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York. As Hans Hess remarked, "In these landscapes, Feininger reached a poetic simplicity and clarity that borders on the abstract-not in the sense of the nonobjective but in the sense of the essential. The poetry of the world is the content of Feininger's pictures."
