Lot Essay

The Salviati glass works was established in 1859 by the Italian lawyer Antonio Salviati, who revitalised the Venetian glass industry, employing the best of Murano's glass makers and technicians.

His cunning marketing technique of opening an Oxford Street showroom and then donating pieces to the South Kensington Museum, now the V & A, established Salviati glass as the epitome of good taste for the 19th century British public.
