The Imperial Order, Daughters of the British Empire was founded in 1909 by Mrs. J Elliot Langstaff. The DBE, as it is known, is a non-profit non-political American society of women of British or Commonwealth birth or ancestry. The members have common interests and heritage, and meet regularly for business and social events with the common cause of philanthropy. The main objective is the support of four District Homes for retired men and women of all nationalities. Chapters and State Societies also participate in many charitable activities in their local communities, mostly with the elderly.
During her visit to New York in November 1965 Princess Margaret toured Greenwich Village, the Bowery, Chinatown and New York Harbour. She was entertained by John Hay Whitney at his Manhasset estate and lunched at the Museum of Modern Art. She was cheered by office workers from their skyscraper windows as she visited various department stores in Manhattan and was shown the Rockefeller complex by Laurence Rockefeller. On her final night the Times reported that she attended an 'American kitchen party' for 212 people at the Four Seasons restaurant as the guest of Miss Sharman Douglas.
