Princess Margaret celebrated her 21st birthday at Balmoral. She spent part of the morning answering some of the many of the messages of congratulations she had received and then joined the rest of the Royal Family on the grouse moor. After a picnic lunch she watched the shoot. In the evening a dinner and dance was held, during which the King proposed Princess Margaret's health. After dinner the guest assembled to watch the lighting of a bonfire built during the day to mark the occasion. It was reported that the flames could be seen for over five miles.
