Lot Essay

John MacDonald Aiken was born in Aberdeen and studied at Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen, at the Royal College of Art and in Florence. He became head of the Gray's school of art in 1911 until 1914 when he served four years in the First World War. He was elected an associate of the RSA in 1923 and a full member in 1935.
