Details
A GEORGE III SILVER WAITER
MARK OF JOHN CARTER, LONDON, 1775
Circular and on three pad feet, with a gadrooned rim, later engraved with a crest, marked on back
7¼ in. (18.3 cm.) diameter
9 oz. (285 gr.)
The crest is that of Halles or Hale, as granted by William Camden, Clarenceux King of Arms, in February 1605. The member of the Halles or Hale family to whom the crest was granted was probably Richard Hale (d.1620) of London, who purchased the estate of King's Walden, Hertfordshire. The crest on the salver is possibly for William Hale (d.1829) of Kings Walden, who married the Hon. Mary Grimston, daughter of James, 2nd Viscount Grimston, in 1777.
