Lot Essay

The present work is a quintissential Hone image, resting cattle in verdant meadows with a low horizon and a slightly overcast sky captured in tones which reflect the Ireland the artist loved so much.

This painting and Sunset, St Doulough's (lot 41) were exhibited at the 1908 Franco-British Exhibition the year after Hone had presented Pastures at Malahide to the National Gallery of Ireland.
