Lot Essay

The artist has commented on this work 'In 1993 I made two sculptures by touch, a female torso and this male torso. Wearing a blindfold, I worked with both hands simultaneously, massaging the soft clay into shape. As the clay dried and became firmer, I was able to identify the details with my fingertips. No modelling tools were used. I cast the sculpture in one piece, feeding the bronze from the inside, so as to maintain the integrity of the surface and avoid machine finishing: just a rub with sandpaper and a slight bloom of patina. This sculpture is meant to be touched.

The Male Torso won the award for sculpture in the R.H.A. Annual Exhibition in 1994 and was also exhibited in the Solomon Gallery and Galerie Husstege' (private correspondence, 2006).
