Surry Triumphant: or The Kentish-Mens Defeat. A new ballad being a parody of Chevy-Chace

London: J[oseph] Johnson, 1773. 4to., woodcut title vignette (light browning to title and final leaf), modern half calf and marbled boards. Provenance: John Arlott[?] -- Tony Winder (bookplate; sold Phillips, London, An Important Collection of Cricket Books, 21 November 1985, lot 535).

FIRST EDITION. The match took place at Bishopsbourne Paddock, the seat of Sir Horatio Mann, on 24 July, 1773, for £2000, and leaf A2 gives the scores of the two innings, showing Surrey triumphant by 153 runs. The Rev. John Duncombe, curate of Sundridge, near Sevenoaks, wrote his poem in the same metre and the same spirited language as the ballad of Chevy-Chace. RARE. Although there are 3 copies in the M.C.C. Library, ESTC identifies holdings at just two institutional libraries throughout the British Isles and North America (BL/2 and Trinity College, Cambridge).
