New York: Jerome Flannery [but 1890 C.J. Sabiston; 1891 Week's Sport Co.], 1890-1900. 11 vols., small 4to., half-tone illustrations in final vol. (spotting on title and preliminaries of 1890, upper corners of 1893 a little creased, hole in blank area of pp. 9-14 in 1895), original pictorial wrappers (rebacked in paper, most rebacks with titles in facsimile, spotting to 1890 and 1891), in two fitted cloth boxes. Provenance: Alfred D. Taylor (booklabel in 1890, 1891, 1896 and 1897, inscription in 1900) -- H.A. Cohen (sold Phillips, The Hal Cohen Collection, 26 January 1995, lot 375).

A HANDSOME ANNUAL, complete but for the final volume of 1901. W.G. Grace featured regularly on the front cover until eventually replaced by the figure of a young bowler in college boater. Flannery was secretary of the Cosmopolitan Cricket Club, New York, and reported succinctly on visits by overseas elevens including Lord Hawke's team (1891 and 1894), the Irish team (1892), Cambridge (1895), the Australian team (1896, "the strongest combination that ever played in the United States"), Warner's team of English amateurs (1898), and Ranjitsinhji's Eleven (1899). The magazine was continued in 1904 as Spalding's Official Cricket Guide (see next lot). Padwick 4045. (11)
