CHARLES F. PARDON
The Australians in England: A Complete Record of the Cricket Tour of 1884
London: George Robertson, [1884]. 8vo., with 8 preliminary and 5 final advertisement leaves, wood-engraved portrait of Murdoch, original green pictorial stiffened wrappers (front wrapper soiled, spine worn and repaired, front inner hinges repaired), protective cloth box. Provenance: E.L. Fletcher (ownership inscription on front wrapper and preliminary, dated 1904). Padwick 4977. [and:]
The Fourth Australian Cricket Team: Their Scores in the Colonies and in England
London: Cricket Office, [1884]. 8vo., 13 wood-engraved player portraits (front advertisement leaf restored, final leaf frayed at outer margin), green half calf and marbled boards, original stiffened front wrapper bound in. Padwick 4976.
After the defeat of 1882, the number of Test matches was increased from one to three. A century by A.G. Steel, and figures of 7 for 36 by Ulyett in Australia's second innings, gave England victory by an innings and five runs in the second Test at Lord's. While the other matches were drawn, Australia broke records in the final Test at the Oval with a first innings total of 551. Murdoch's 211 stood for 46 years as the highest score in England between the two countries. Every man in the England team bowled, including Lyttleton, the wicket-keeper, who took 4 for 19 with lobs.
