Depicting the story Magu xian shou, a spotted deer pulling a cart with the Godess of the West, Xiwangmu, beside three lady Immortals holding a peach (Magu), vase and vessel, the broad everted pink-ground rim enriched with flower-heads and divided by cartouches of pilgrims reclining in a landscape, small glaze frit

Lot Essay

During the Qing dynasty the play of Magu xian shou was often performed on the occasion of female birthdays. Paintings with this subject matter were considered an appropriate gift for such occasions. For men, one tended to prefer a scene from the play Nanjixianweng.
