Lot Essay

This extraordinarily rare drypoint was produced by Dr. Paul Gachet in whose house Van Gogh was living at the time of his death. Dr. Gachet, an amateur etcher and the subject of Van Gogh's last print, was an important early collector of various artists' work, including those by Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin. One presumes that this plate was produced in 1890 or shortly thereafter and is a printed form of the traditional death mask.
