Lot Essay

Design elements characteristic of a Massachusetts origin include the diamond-shaped inlay that adorns the edges of both leaves and the bottom of the apron, as well as the double-taper legs. (For more information on regional differences in Federal hinged-top tables, see Benjamin A. Hewitt, Patricia E. Kane and Gerald W.R. Ward, The Work of Many Hands: Card Tables in Federal American 1790-1820 (New Haven, 1982), pp. 178-195.) According to tradition, this table was purchased from the Dodge family of Damariscotta, Maine. The Dodge family was prominent along Massachusetts' North Shore and it is possible that they were the original owners of this table.
