Lot Essay
The gilt-stenciled bolection molding, marble pilasters flanking the mirror and gilt-stenciled shelf of this table distinguish it from other tables made in New York in the early 19th century. A pier table in the Bybee Collection at the Dallas Museum of Art, illustrated in Charles L. Venable, American Furniture in the Bybee Collection (Austin, 1989), pp. 122-123, cat. no. 55 exhibits similar gilt-stenciled bolection molding and boldly carved lion's feet. The gilt-stenciled shelf and marble pilasters can also be found on a pier table in the collection of the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute, illustrated in Anna Tobin D'Ambrosio, Masterpieces of American Furniture from the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute (Utica, 1999), pp. 42-43, cat. no. 8.
