Lot Essay
Virtually identical to the previous lot, this example differs slightly in the theme of the porcelain plaques and the inlay decoration on the case. The porcelain plaques are stylized copies of portraits of the Renaissance painters Michelangelo and Raphael while the inlay features birds rather than flowers. The subtle disparities between these two cabinets emphasize the distinctly different decorative styles that were considered fashionable in the 1860s. While the cabinets may have been made as a pair, it is also possible that they represent two distinct commissions with their close similarities indicative of practices in a large furniture shop in late nineteenth century New York.
