Appelée parfois Possession voire l'Emprise par confusion avec une esquisse très proche, cette oeuvre appartient à l'univers fantastique cher à Charles Baudelaire dans lequel Rodin puisera.
C'est à l'initiative de Monsieur Georges Bénard, financier franco-américain, conduit au Musée Rodin par Eugène Rudier, que l'édition de ce petit sujet fut réalisée dès 1929. Selon nos connaissances actuelles, on recense au moins cinq épreuves en bronze réalisées par la fonderie Alexis Rudier pour le Musée Rodin entre 1929 et 1944.
Oftentimes called Possession or l'Empire due to confusion with a similiar work, this bronze is part of a series of works inspired by the fantastic imagery in the writings of Charles Baudelaire into which Rodin often delved.
It was at the initiative of Georges Bénard, a French-American banker, introduced to the Musée Rodin by Eugène Rudier, that the edition of this subject was realized. To date, there are at least five known casts in bronze executed by the Alexis Rudier foundry for the Musée Rodin between 1929 and 1944.
